  • Hi,
I am also thinking about eGPU to work my rift (I got a Mac Pro), Apple do sell a VR dev kit that is compatible with High Sierra for developer which works for Mac and you just have to buy all the components separately.
    -Sonnet eGPU breakaway box
-Radeon RX 580 GPU with 8GB of RAM
-USB hub to convert a Type-C port to several Type A connections
    Read about it here.

  • I'd bet you could get a PC laptop to play the rift on for less than the frankenstein accessories you need to purchase for the mac. They charge too much for anything mac so, I'd explore the actual costs first.
The HDMI cable should plug into the HDMI port that is on the GPU.
  • I had the Rift running on the 2017 iMac in boot camp no Egpu needed. Worked great on the i7 with the 580.

Hello, I'm currently trying to setup my oculus rift (bought 6 months ago) on my new iMac 2017 4,2 GHz Intel Core i7 with Radeon Pro 580 8192 Mb, I have 40 Gb memory.
I'm on BOOTCAMP with new AMD drivers installed, and windows 10.
I bought a first HDMI to USB-C adapter (ANKER),
everything worked fine except the video signal with a black out every second.
I bought a second HDMI to USB-C Adapter (LMP), video signal is stable, but I have a huge white flickering..and when I move, it's like while moving, the black helmet wire is making even more flickering into the video signal.
Any idea to help me ?
Which HDMI adapter do you use ?
Did you encounter any video flickering and found solution?
Thanks a lot for your help !

Ok, then, this is just wonderful. The Oculus works perfectly (so far) on my iMac 2017. I had to buy 3 HDMI to USB-C adapters before finding the good one, and the winner is.. the APPLE one.. just go to an APPLE STORE and buy the adapter there, don’t bother.. it works perfectly ! When others are giving back flicking video signal.

SO happy to read of another imac user having success, i live in hope of finding the right dongle..
  • Yes this one, the adaptor sold by APPLE under its own brand, with extra usb and power port. After a few days, trying several adapters.. with different type of flicking in the HMD as a result, I was really happy to
  • Please help I have the new iMac 2017 with pro Radeon 580 with i5 3.8 ghz using the apple brand usb-c to hdmi/usb adapter, running bootcamp, when I install and connect rift everything works while still on the machine but.. after shutting down and starting back up the iMac in bootcamp whenever I plug in the rift HMD windows freezes up and restarts the machine, but when it first installed before restarting everything works, all help appreciated

any help would be great as I don't understand how it install on my machine bootcamp works fine and then after shutting down the bootcamp once after that every time the hmd is plugged in with the apple usb c adapter freezes bootcamp completely to restart making it unusable
  • Has anyone found a working alternative to Apple's HDMI to USB C converter? I'm currently using a MOKiN converter. It 'works' but it's glitchy--red and blue horizontal lines and some color shifting/blurriness. Would love to find a working converter that isn't $70..
    Thanks!
  • I went out and bought Apple’s newest USB C to HDMI adapter. Doesn’t work. I’ll try to find the older model you suggested and let you guys know if it works.
