Cooking Mama 3: Shop & Chop[a] released as Cooking Mama 3 in Japan, Europe and Australia, is the sequel to the Nintendo DSvideo gameCooking Mama 2: Dinner with Friends and is the third installment to the Cooking Mama series on the Nintendo DS. Developed by 505 Games, Majesco Entertainment, and Taito, Shop & Chop features five different game modes, including two new ones, over 80 different recipes, 200 unique mini-games, four-player multiplayer, and the classic gameplay.

The sequel to this game, Cooking Mama 4: Kitchen Magic for the Nintendo 3DS, was released on November 16, 2011.[1]

Gameplay[edit]

Following the style of the Cooking Mama series, this game is loosely based on a cooking simulation, though more focused on the mini-games. For those that have never played the series: Recipes are divided into mini-games, the number of which varies by how complex the meal is, and by successfully completing the mini-games, a tasty meal is created. Shop & Chop introduces a different background, different-looking medals, and Cooking Mama actually talks instead of using speech bubbles. Many aspects of the game are now customizable, such as the colors of the pots and pans, to the countertop and background, to even Mama herself. Mama can be dressed up with new outfits, which also include accessories such as bunny ears or even bows. Graphics have also slightly been enhanced, the familiar tasks of dicing, mixing, etc. have been made different so as to add variety, and there is an added feature of importing the vegetables you have grown in Gardening Mama.

This installment includes recipes such as Marshmallow, Candy Apples, Pickles, French Cruller, Korean Barbecue, Baukuchen, Vongole Bianco, Fried Shrimp, Cabbage Rolls, Tepura, Dried Squid, Cheese Risotto Potato Wedges, Sushi and many more. Even more hidden recipes can be unlocked after obtaining the initial 64. You are also able to grow your own ingredients, or buy them in the new grocery store mode, Let's Shop.

Game modes[edit]

Let's Shop is the biggest feature added to Shop & Chop. This mode features five different levels, each of which is progressively harder than the last. Instead of cooking with Mama, the player is sent to the grocery store to pick up supplies. The player controls Ichigo (Mama's daughter[2]) with the stylus in the bottom half of the DS screen and run her around the store to obtain the supplies while racing against the clock. However, running into other customers, such as mothers with babies or store employees, causes the player to play mini-games that also count against the clock. The mini-games are generated at random and no instructions are given. If the player fails to win the mini-game, Ichigo loses a heart and after she loses three, she goes home. By successfully completing the shopping trip, the player is awarded items to customize the kitchen or outfits/accessories to dress up Mama.

Cooking Mama[b] is a series of cookerysimulation-styled minigame compilation video games developed by Cooking Mama Limited. Generally, the gameplay revolves around performing different kitchen tasks, through the instructions of 'Mama', to cook various meals. The series so far consists of five main games on Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS, two spin-offs on Wii, two spin offs on DS, and a spin off on 3DS. It also spins off into the Gardening Mama series. The original Cooking Mama Game was also ported to iOS. A sixth main series game, Cooking Mama: Cookstar, was briefly released on the Nintendo Switch eShop on March 31, 2020, but was taken down hours later due to legal issues. Whether the game will be properly released or not is currently unknown.

Gameplay[edit]

A screenshot from the first game in the series for the Nintendo DS, showcasing the player slicing octopus leg for a dish

Gameplay involves the player following the instructions of the titular 'Mama' to cook various meals. This is performed by using the device's controller, typically the touch screen, to perform various kitchen tasks such as chopping vegetables, slicing meat, flipping food in pans, and arranging the final items onto a plate. Each of these tasks is accomplished by completing a minigame which usually lasts less than 10 seconds. The series' gameplay structure consists of the player progressing through a series of short minigames.

Each minigame represents a different activity in the meal preparation, such as mixing, frying, or chopping the provided ingredients. The minigame mechanics themselves range from quickly drawing parallel lines in order to chop items, to a rhythm game where ingredients are added to a skillet or the heat is adjusted at precisely the right time. If the player makes a serious blunder or time expires without sufficient progress being made, that step in the cooking process is considered a failure. When this happens, a graphic of an angry 'Mama' with flames erupting from her eyes is displayed, along with the caption 'Don't worry, Mama will fix it!'.

Completing a dish can require playing one minigame, or as many as a dozen. The player's performance is rated when each dish is finished, based on the average result of each minigame. Depending on the final score, the game may award the player a bronze, silver or gold medal. The highest medal earned for each dish is recorded and displayed next to each item on the selection screen.

Main article: Cooking Mama: Cookstar

Cooking Mama: Cookstar is the sixth main installment in the Cooking Mama series. The game was briefly released on the Nintendo Switch eShop on March 31st, 2020, but was taken down just a few hours later due to legal issues between the publisher, Planet Entertainment, and the owner of the Cooking Mama IP, Office Create. The fact that the game released without a public announcement or press statement and was taken down so quickly has led to much speculation about the game’s development and if the game will ever be properly released.[10] A PlayStation 4 version was also announced with the game’s initial announcement in August 2019, but hasn’t released or been advertised by Planet Entertainment since. If the game does release on PS4, it would be the first Cooking Mama game released on a platform that isn’t Nintendo or mobile.
